Armstrong Rowe was established in the summer of 2001 by the partners, Marie Armstrong and Nick Rowe after working at a leading Architectural healthcare practice for several years. We felt confident that our experience in healthcare design and interaction with some of the largest firms in the business, along with a shared 36 years of experience working in the construction industry, had given us the skills we needed to take the steps to independence and start our own company. At first, the practice was set up to offer our expertise in equipment room loading to architectural practices who simply lacked the spare resources or experience to efficiently complete this stage of the project themselves. Among Architects, it seemed a useful service to offer, as room loading is often an unpopular task among those who would rather be performing more creative functions. Although equipment room-loading still accounts for around 85% of our workload we now also offer technical architectural services, and have delivered a number of production information packages on schedule and to a required level of quality. The practice uses the popular CodeBook software as a library for loading equipment into drawings and producing ADB equipment lists to accompany them; this software is compatible with both the latest versions AutoCAD and Microstation. We also run the NHS activity database software to assist the functionality of CodeBook and to provide initial ADB sheets. The team is completed at the moment by Maximilian Tatton-Brown who we have trained to proficiency in CodeBook. In times of need, we have three additional technicians who may be summoned to assist the team as well as sharing office space with a firm of architects who have also been drafted to help in the past. Our flexibility has allowed us to generally adapt our practised formula to accommodate the needs of each client specifically. Typically, we have found it best for everyone when we liberate the client of the room-loading process entirely and simply take full responsibility for the CodeBook aspects of a project from start to finish, culminating in the presentation of room data sheets and elevations. To aid these processes, we also find it useful to attend user group meetings as these provide an opportunity to clarify the clients' needs and contribute to negotiation between the various groups involved in the process.
